Chimney Fire Prompts Investigation

Fire and EMS units from James City County and the City of Williamsburg responded to a house fire Tuesday at 12:20 p.m. in the Chisel Run subdivision in James City County.

A resident of 5337 Gardner Court was waiting outside his home when crews arrived and told responders that no one else was in the unit, according to a press release. Upon entering the home, the crew found a fire burning in the fireplace with light smoke and haze in another room. Another crew searched the attic space and also found light smoke with a small fire at the top of the chimney.

Using a small hose line in the attic space, the crew removed the chimney facade from around the flue and extinguished the burning material. They then removed the remaining debris from the structure. The exterior chimney flue was also removed and brought to the ground.

Fire units cleared the scene around 2 p.m.

The James City County Fire Marshal's office is conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire.

There were no reported injuries.
