Camp Peary Source of Booming Sounds

People near Lightfoot and Richmond Roads may have heard some loud booms today and in the past few weeks, been unsure of the source of the noise. The curious sounds are produced by a training exercise at Camp Peary.

Exercises are conducted every Monday morning, beginning around 9 a.m. and ending by noon, at one of the ranges on base, according to Chief of Security Robin Richardson. The exercise usually involves a couple of “louder” explosions.

Richardson said the change in the seasons might be to blame for how far the sound of the exercise is being heard.

“I don’t know if it’s because most of the leaves on the trees are gone and the sound carries, but our neighbors are aware of the exercise,” Richardson said.

Would it be asking too much if we could get a warning when to expect these "larger" explosions? For all we knew this could have been a natural gas line explosion and may have been a safety issue for those in the area. I am also disappointed because after searching for three days to find the cause of this I get a short 4 paragraph explanation. I understand the need to hold exercises and I support them, I just would like a "head-up".

These were especially loud near Lightfoot. Glad to know that Monday mornings are routine.

We fairly regularly hear the Camp Peary booms where we live, in the middle of Ford's Colony and some distance from Camp Peary. Yesterday's booms seemed particularly loud, just as an observation.
