Triangle Unemployment About Flat in Fall

Unemployment in the Triangle hovered close to flat over the fall months in 2011 compared to 2010.

In the months of September through November, each Triangle locality saw very incremental increases of a few tenths of a percent in unemployment rates over the year previous. Over the same period, the state unemployment rate dropped each month compared to the year previous.

In November, unemployment rates were 4.9 percent, 14.7 percent and 5.3 percent in James City County, Williamsburg and York County, respectively. In the same month in 2010, rates were 5.2 percent, 14.5 percent and 5.5 percent, respectively.

In October 2011, rates were 5.1 percent in James City County, 14.3 percent in Williamsburg and 5.6 percent in York. In September, the rates were 5.1 percent in James City, 14.3 percent in Williamsburg and 5.6 percent in York. In these months in 2010, rates were a few tenths of a percentage point lower, also.

The majority of people filing claims were in management, information and records clerk positions, business operator specialist jobs and construction.
