Language in GA Bill Will Change, No Longer a Help to Mausoleum PlanBy Desiree Parker Friday, January 13, 2012 In response to local outcry against a proposed General Assembly bill that citizens worried would make a contentious mausoleum become reality, Del. Mike Watson (R-93rd) said he’s working with the bill’s sponsor to change the language. At a Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday evening, several citizens spoke about the proposed mausoleum planned at St. Bede. Many of them talked about House Bill 316, offered this week by Del. Riley Ingram from Hopewell, which would allow the mausoleum to be built by circumventing local authority.Watson issued a press release Thursday and promised he was working with Ingram. He included a quote from Ingram saying the intent of the bill was not related to the mausoleum issue here. “I’ve been working closely with Ingram’s office to change the language of the bill,” Watson said. “After speaking with Ingram’s office it was clear the intent of HB 316 was in no way associated with the current issue in James City County.” “My sponsoring of the bill was in no way associated with the current issue in the 93rd district,” Ingram said. “My staff and I have been working to amend the bill’s current language so to not affect any particular situation ongoing. In no way was this bill intended to affect what is currently ongoing at St. Bede [and its] mausoleum.” Watson said he met with Ingram and asked him to change the language so it wouldn’t affect the mausoleum issue, and Ingram agreed. Watson said his office will keep working with Ingram until the bill’s language is fixed. “I want people to know I care, I’m listening to their problems and will be proactive in solving them,” said Watson. |
