WJCC to Restructure Administration, Eliminate Positions

The Williamsburg-James City County School Board voted on Jan. 17 to eliminate and modify several positions in the school division’s administration.

The new organizational structure is a “strategic move to position the school division to implement and continuously measure the new strategic plan and achieve other goals directed at school-level support, consistency, program analysis, accountability, family/community engagement and other targeted objectives,” according Jon Andre, director of human resources for the division.

Andre said that although some savings will be realized from the restructuring, the initiative is not budget-driven.

The following positions have been eliminated, effective July 1:

• Assistant Superintendent for Academic Services

• Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations

• Senior Director for Multicultural Affairs

• Senior Director for Student Learning and Accountability

• Coordinator for AVID

• Coordinator for Special Education

• Communications Specialist

• Parent Resource Center Coordinator

• Webmaster

At this time, those positions are filled (in order) by Dianna Lindsay; Scott Burckbuchler; Angelina Hopkins; Regina Yitbarek; Marie Nice; Paula Edgette (who is serving right now as Acting Supervisor for Special Education, following the previous employee's retirement); Greg Davy; Suzanne Stuart; and Hoyt Davenport. The employees have not all necessarily been eliminated, but their existing positions will be cut.

In addition, several jobs will be modified into new positions, including:

• Director of Public Relations and Community Engagement

• Coordinator for Family and Community Engagement

• Communications and Digital Design Specialist

• Supervisor for Gifted Education would assume responsibilities for AVID, if the program is kept in the budget.

The responsibilities of the eliminated positions would be redistributed under a few new titles:

• Deputy Superintendent

• Chief Financial Officer

• Senior Director for Accountability, Quality and Innovation

• Senior Director for School Performance

• Coordinator for Multicultural Education

It has not been announced whether the employees currently serving in the eliminated positions will be filling the new or modified positions. Andre said Superintendent Steve Constantino has met individually with all affected employees. The changes will not take place until July 1, and any proposed personnel actions will be subject to review and approval of the School Board.

A position with the word "multicultural" was eliminated but another position with the word "multicuralal" remains. Is this a teaching position?
I graduated from a small high school in rural Texas where students spoke English and another language namely German, Polish, and Czech and we didn't have a multicultural position.

To paraphrase «a citizen»:
"The powerful keep what they have and [those without power] scramble and [do without].
Apparently that's the 21st century American way, at all levels of society. I guess the GOP liked 19th century America and are now trying to recreate it.

So what was the point??? I'm sure that quite a few of my hard earned tax dollars were spent in the studies, planning meetings, and presentations for this initiative. So again, I have to ask, what was the point?

Nine positions "eliminated", nine "redistributed/ modified". This is only a way for WJCC to say " we DID eliminate administration positions. In the end, the lack will fall on the teachers who's classes will fill up with more students and less assistance; fewer adults per child. That means less learning, less teaching and more crowd control. Is this how we build our community? The powerful keep what they have, and the weak scramble and starve.

:-? What message does it send to children and families thta the Coordinator of Special Ed is eliminated but the Coordinator for Gifted Education is retained? Special Ed. students deserve and need coordianted services. That position does not appear any where is the new "modified"posit ions.

I guess you missed the following sentence: "Andre said that although some savings will be realized from the restructuring, the initiative is not budget-driven."
Since it is not budget driven one should NOT expect savings. The fact that some will be realized is just coincidence.

I don't see how job titles changing is saving money. Is everybody taking a paycut?
