JCC has New Logo, Redesigned Website

jcc_new_logoJames City County launched a new logo and the first part of a redesigned website Wednesday.

The new look is based on the public art sculpture “Voyage” that commemorated the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown and was commissioned in 2007 for Legacy Hall. The logo’s design reflects the county’s history and its commitment to collaboration.

The logo was created by county staff at no extra expense for the county, and the website is being redesigned in house, too. The county’s new “brand” will be implemented over several years with the bulk items changed as they are used up. A great deal of materials will be updated when inventory is used up or worn out; in any year, the cost for the program will be no more than a few thousand dollars.

“As we move forward, our County logo should prompt a connection to our mission, vision and values,” said County Administrator Robert Middaugh in a message about the change.

“However, it is important to understand that James City County’s visual imagery or brand is more than a logo. It is the visual

About the logo

Words: “Jamestown 1607” connects the county to its past; “Virginia” helps to identify the County brand outside of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Sails: represent the three ships that brought the Virginia Company of London to county shores. The shape draws one’s eye back towards the words; yet the integrated design conveys our movement forward as one unified group.

Water: reflects the county value of collaboration; it is moving the county forward. The water and the sails were borrowed from the old logo, honoring the past and moving toward the future.

Colors: inspired by the public art sculpture "Voyage".

representation of our philosophy and our work culture.”

He uses the analogy of a sports team’s logo and colors. “The image [sports teams] show through their brand makes the viewer think of what that team stands for, the traditions and team values and helps to maintain a common view and team loyalty.

The county's former logo.
“Just like a sports team, the new logo will represent what we stand for as we use our revised strategic plan to improve the organization and strive for excellence.”

The first phase of changes will include the replacement of two major corridor entry signs, county government center signage on Mounts Bay Road, vehicle decals, letterhead and business cards and electronic and web based materials. Subsequent phases will be funded at a similar level on an annual basis.

Love the logo - change is good - the old logo is quite dated and in my opinion ugly. Good to know that we no longer live in a county in a time warp.

Looks like 'Three Sheets to the Wind' type of spending.

The new logo may have been developed in house and perhaps the web site will be changed in house too, but that doesn't make it free - we're paying the salary of the employee or employees involved in the project. There wasn't any thing wrong with the old logo and implementing the new logo on county vehicles, letterhead, etc. will cost big bucks in the future. Thanks Robert Middaugh for spending our tax dollars in frivolous ways and to the Board of Supervisors for endorsing this wasteful spending.

Isn't it true, no spin, that one individual coming into the County system offices was THE one who pushed for a change, individually taking the position that the traditional loco we've appreciated for years NEEDED a change simply for change? And has been using the "logic" that the actual costs would be in-house?
YES!...YES!!
Did we, the public, have any say-so in this important change?
NO!...NO!!...NO!!! WE WANT IT CHANGED BACK!!!!!!!!!!! !
