Toddler Ejected in Crash on Route 134

Two children are hospitalized after a car accident police say was caused by their father.

Around 4:30 p.m. Thursday a 2001 Chevy Malibu traveling southbound on Route 134 in the Tabb area of York County ran a red light while trying to make a left turn onto Yorktown Road. The Malibu first struck a Chevrolet Sienna cargo van, which caused a two year-old passenger in the Malibu to be ejected. The Malibu then hit a pick-up truck that was stopped at a stop sign on Yorktown Road.

Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Michelle Anaya said the two year-old and a seven-year-old sibling were taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. Their father, 35-year-old Michael Sawyer of the first block of Azalea Drive in Newport News, was charged in the accident, Anaya said. He faces charges of running a red light, reckless driving and failure to secure a child in a child restraint.

Anaya said alcohol was not a factor, and that the children were not properly buckled at the time of the crash. She could not say immediately where the children were seated.

No other injuries were reported.

Yes it is heart breaking,my prayers go out to these children (and their families) that are so unfortunate to have such a negligent father. These chldren may well be dealing with their injuries for the rest of their lives, because their father has a total lack of common sense.

This is heartbreaking. Double check that you've buckled up those babies, everyone!
