Two local groups are looking for some volunteers to help with marking and making history.
In the marking history department, the National Park Service is seeking volunteers for a living history unit portraying the Royal Artillery at the Yorktown Battlefield unit of Colonial National Historical Park. Volunteers will be part of a six-person crew who will demonstrate the live firing of a Revolutionary War 6-pounder cannon and interpret the role of artillery
during the 1781 Siege of Yorktown.
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, willing to work as part of a team to accurately and safely portray the artillery crew, and conduct research on the 1781 Siege of Yorktown, 18th- century artillery, and the Royal Artillery to be proficient to answer visitor questions. Previous experience working with 18th- or 19th-century artillery is desirable, though not required. New volunteer recruits will be provided uniforms and equipment, as well as hands-on training utilizing the National Park Service manual of arms for 18th-century artillery.
For more information or an application to participate in the Royal Artillery program, contact Park Ranger Robbie Smith at 898-2414.
Over on the making history side of things, organizers for the inaugural races this May through Colonial Williamsburg are looking for help, too.
Volunteers are needed in support of the Run for the Dream Half Marathon; Fit to Run, Fit to Dream 8K Run/Walk and Fun Run on Saturday, May 21 and Sunday, May 22 in historic Colonial Williamsburg. Volunteer positions are available in the following categories: course marshals, water stations, registration & expo, post-race bash, concierge, medical and parking & transportation.
No experience is necessary. All volunteers will receive a souvenir T-shirt and may partake in a fun-filled post-race celebration at the College of William & Mary’s Sunken Garden. This is a great opportunity for individual volunteers or for a church, corporate or community service group to volunteer together for a great cause! For more information and to register, click here.
