Community Notebook: Employment Workshop, Legal Clinic, Fundraiser, Cabin Fever Fest

This Saturday, the Williamsburg Job Transitions group is hosting an “unEmployment” workshop Saturday to help people enhance their job-finding skills.

Pam Janaro, with TAI, will help attendees evaluate and leverage skills to target a new career and Marsha Yocum, with Express Employment Professionals, will share telephone interview techniques.

Wrenn Holland, owner of Chick-Fil-A, will conduct mock interviews and tell participants of the workshop what happens after the interview. Mike Jacobs of the Jacobs Group will share various networking techniques from introductions to building relationships.

The workshop will be held on Saturday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Williamsburg Community Chapel on John Tyler Highway. Register online or by calling 941-1232. The cost is $5 and proceeds benefit the Williamsburg Job Transition Ministry.

Free Legal Clinic

William and Mary School of Law, the Williamsburg Bar Association and the WJCC Community Action Agency are co-sponsoring a free legal outreach program Saturday.

The program is intended to help people who can’t afford to pay for legal advice and services. Topics will include bankruptcy, child custody and support matters, consumer law, domestic relations, employment law, real property, Medicaid, protective orders, restoration of civil rights and driving priviedges, social security, uncontested divorce and wills.

For more information or if you need transportation, call Yvonne Joseph at 229-9332 to schedule an appointment. When you call, you will be asked for information concerning your wages and other property that you have. Your information is confidential.

Walk-ins will be accepted, but there is no guarantee that walk-ins will be seen. The program will be held at Toano Middle School from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Fundraiser

Liberty Tax Service is hosting a free Roadside Party Event to benefit Beyond Boobs! Inc. on Saturday.

Liberty has planned a day of family fun and entertainment with free food, music, costumed characters, a video party truck, and giveaways.

Bring in gift cards of any kind (grocery stores, coffee shops, flower shops, gas cards, book stores, movie theaters, etc.) in any dollar amount to be distributed in Beyond Boobs! “Hope Totes.” These totes will be given to young women diagnosed with breast cancer to provide items to encourage and comfort them as they battle this disease. Donations will be accepted as well.

Liberty Tax will be giving out coupons and prizes to all who contribute.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. until 1p.m. at the Liberty tax on Monticello Avenue.

Cabin Fever Festival

The 4th annual Cabin Fever festival will be held Sunday at New Quarter Park.

Outdoor recreation and nature organizations from all over Hampton Roads and as far away as Richmond will set up booths and host demonstrations at the park from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.

The Delvers, an American Roots Music band, will be playing favorite Americana and swing music on the basketball court during exhibit hours.
