Community Notebook: Helping Out Grove Residents After Tornado

community-notebook

The Grove community is rallying to help families left homeless after Saturday’s tornado.

Areas within the Kingsmill and Grove in James City County were hit by Saturday evening’s tornado. Reid Trailer Park along Route 60 was especially hard hit, with most of the six trailers at the park crushed by the storm. The local chapter of the Red Cross has put six Grove families up in a local hotel temporarily.

Most of the trailer park residents displaced did not have insurance on their homes. Grove Christian Outreach Center has set up a Grove disaster relief account at Towne Bank for those who wish to donate funds to the affected families. The funds will assist with costs such as hotels, food and clothing plus home repairs, debris clean up and replacement of essential household items.

WYDaily visited the Reid Trailer Park on Monday, and many residents said they could not yet enter their home to get their possessions. Members of Grove Christian Outreach Center are assessing the residents’ needs and will collect needed items along with monetary donations. Visit the GCOC’s Facebook page for updates.

James City County's Social Services department will be able to replace food lost due to the tornado for residents using food stamps. The county has also provided some bus tickets and gift cards to help out resdients, and they will assist those who need housing or utility help once the Red Cross aid runs out. For residents needing assistance following Saturday’s storm, call the county’s Emergency Management Department at 564-2140.

To donate to the Grove disaster relief fund, visit any local Towne Bank branch (find the closest location here). To donate money or needed items to affected residents, contact Grove Christian Outreach Center at 887-1100, or contact the local chapter of the Red Cross at 253-0228.
