Community Notebook: CW Grants Awarded, Earth Day Celebration And More

Four Colonial Williamsburg employees have been selected to receive awards from the Mary and Donald Gonzales Field Experience Fund.

The fund provides individual grants of up to $5,000 for continuing education opportunities for non-management employees within the public history, historic trades, historic sites, historic events, coach and livestock, conservation, collections, museums and landscape departments to pursue educational opportunities.

In 2006, Colonial Williamsburg received a $250,000 gift from Deborah S. Pulliam of Castine, Maine. Pulliam established the fund in memory of the late Donald Gonzales, retired Colonial Williamsburg senior vice president, and in honor of his wife Mary, a musician and community activist. Ms. Pulliam died in May 2007.

The employees receiving grants are:

James D. Armbruster of James City County, exhibits specialist in the conservation, collections and museums department, for Vectorworks Core and Intermediate Concepts Training Courses in computer-aided design in Columbia, Md.

Erik Goldstein of James City County, curator of mechanical arts and numismatics in the conservation, collections and department, and Kenneth Schwarz of James City County, master of the Blacksmith Shop, Historic Trades, for tinsmithing in Eastfield Village, N.Y.

Brett R. Walker of Williamsburg, apprentice shoemaker, Historic Trades, for French-Canadian Shoe Artifact Research in Nova Scotia and Quebec, Canada.

Since the fund commenced awards in spring 2007, grants have been provided to 32 employees.

Earth Day Celebration

The Triangle will celebrate Earth Day at Historic Yorktown this Friday from noon to 2 p.m.

Visitors can how local businesses and organizations are earth friendly, learn about environmental careers, discover how to shop green and keep the community clean.

Folks can also recycle electronics, plastic shopping bags, cell phones, rechargeable batteries and printer toner cartridges. Free document shredding service will also be provided. Free reusable shopping tote and lots of other giveaways.

The event is hosted by Counties of York and James City, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the City of Williamsburg, Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority, Busch Gardens Williamsburg/Water Country U.S. A., and Anheuser-Busch Williamsburg Brewery.

Friends of Powhatan Creek Video Screening

See the video: The premier showing of this DVD will take place on April 29 at the FOPC annual meeting which will be held at the James City Williamsburg Community Center at 1PM. The Friends of the Powhatan Creek Watershed is a group of citizens working together to promote responsible Stewardship of the Powhatan Creek Watershed in James City County. Since 1999, this grassroots organization has been committed to the preservation, conservation, and enhancement of the Powhatan Creek Watershed.

Sustainability Round Table

Students at the College of William and Mary are researching how sustainability practices can assist the profitability of Williamsburg’s businesses.

They’re hosting a round table discussion on the topic from 9 to 10 a.m. on April 25 at the Community Building. The students hope to bring Williamsburg businesses together to discuss current and future sustainability projects. The round table will include a guest speaker and small group discussions.
