Community Notebook: Hearing Loss Seminar, Vote for Eagle Program

community-notebook2Senior citizens can learn more about hearing loss at a seminar this week, while kids can learn more about what it took to defend Jamestown’s fort on Saturday. If you’re a fan of the Norfolk Botanical Garden’s eagles, read on to see how you can show your support.

Free Hearing Loss Seminar on Thursday

The Senior Services Coalition will sponsor a free Hearing Loss Seminar at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday at Verena At the Reserve.

The seminar will be presented by Kathi Mestayer, president of the Hearing Loss Association of Williamsburg. Refreshments will be served and tours of the apartment community will be offered for those interested. Free parking is available by following “Event Parking” signs and parking at the rear of the building.

Verena is located at 121 Reserve Way at 4300 Mooretown Road between K-Mart and the Hellenic Center. For more information, call (757) 220-3480.

Vote for Norfolk Botanical’s Eagle Program

Fans of the eagles at Norfolk Botanical Garden have until Wednesday to vote for the garden’s entry in the Chase Community Giving Big Idea Contest.

The winner of the Big Idea Contest will receive $500,000; if they can crack the top five, they’ll earn $100,000. Norfolk Botanical Garden hopes to create a free educational program around its eagles called, “Without Boundaries – Wild Eagle Encounters.” The funds would allows the garden to upgrade its technical capabilities and develop stories, online learning resources, printed materials, videos, images, benchmark-driven educational curricula, demonstrations and other multimedia resources.

Kids Can Learn How to Protect James Fort

Young settlers can muster at Historic Jamestowne this Saturday under the tutelage of Captain Bruster, who arrived at Jamestown in 1610 as commander of Lord De La Warr’s personal guard.

Bruster will show young guests how to use the halberd, an ancient pole arm, at 10:30 a.m., noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Bruster will be portrayed by Willie Balderson, Colonial Williamsburg’s manager of public history development.

While on site, guests can meet Jamestown Rediscovery archaeologists who are on hand to provide information about current fort excavations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission to Historic Jamestowne is $10 per adult and free for children under 16.

Thank you for including the section and link to vote for NBG Eagle Project. I am a big fan and follower of the Eagles there at NBG. It was devastating when mama eagle was killed. I would encourage anyone who loves these eagles to please vote today!
