Community Notebook: Rural Land Discussion, Kiwanis Food Drive and Healthy Recipe Contest

community-notebook2This week, a town hall meeting will focus on rural lands in James City County and Colonial Williamsburg's Revolutionary City will move to cooler hours. The Historic Triangle Healthy Habits program is sponsoring a healthy recipe contest, and the Kiwanis Club is holding a food drive until June 18. Read on for more community news.

Town Hall Meeting Focuses on Rural Lands

The James City County Citizens Coalition (J4C) and Friends of Forge Road and Toano (FORT) are co-sponsoring a town hall meeting Wednesday to discuss rural lands in James City County.

Discussion topics will include possible uses for rural lands, whether the county should designate land to remain rural, problems faced by rural land owners, preservation, residential uses and more.

The meeting will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the community room at the James City County Regional Library on Croaker Road. For more information, contact Linda Rice or Sarah Kadec.

Kiwanis Food Drive Ends June 18

Kiwanis Club is in the middle of its food drive, which benefits FISH and Grove Christian Outreach. Between now and June 18, food donations will be collected at the following locations: Center Street Grill; Computer Concepts in New Town; Kerner Group; Liz Moore & Associates in New Town; Northwestern Mutual on Ironbound Road; Sterling Manor Clubhouse; Union First Market Bank on Monticello Avenue; Union First Market Bank on John Tyler Highway; Union First Market Bank on Monticello in Windsor Meade; and the Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport.

Checks can also be sent to Kiwanis to allow the organizations to buy food for 10 cents on the dollar. Make checks payable to either FISH or Grove Christian Outreach and mail to Kiwanis Ultimate Food Drive, 5118 Center Street, Williamsburg, VA 23188.

LHT Launches Healthy Recipe Exchange

The 2011 Leadership Historic Triangle Class has launched on online Healthy Recipe Exchange developed with KitchenMonki.com. The exchange enables individuals, restaurants and others to share healthy recipes and assists with meal planning and grocery lists.

To promote the site, the Historic Triangle Healthy Habits program and KitchenMonki.com are co-sponsoring an online sweepstakes, ending June 19. Individuals who post a healthy recipe that can feed four for less than $20 here will be eligible to win one of two prizes: Four one-day passes to Busch Gardens (expiring Oct. 30) or four one-day passes to Water Country USA (expiring Sept. 9). The winners will be selected at random on June 21.

CW’s Revolutionary City Moves to Summer Hours

The sixth season of Colonial Williamsburg’s outdoor street theater presentation, Revolutionary City, will move to cooler morning hours for the summer season starting Monday.

Revolutionary City is presented from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. daily in the Historic Area near the Capitol. A Colonial Williamsburg admission ticket or Good Neighbor pass is required for access.

New Director Named for Historic Jamestowne Fund

Andrew Zellers-Frederick has joined Colonial Williamsburg as director of the Historic Jamestowne Fund. He is responsible for all fundraising efforts for Historic Jamestowne.

He has served as executive director of the Woodlands Trust for Historic Preservation, executive director of the Masonic Library and Museum of Pennsylvania and executive director of Historic Rittenhouse Town, all located in Philadelphia.

Historic Jamestowne is jointly administered by Preservation Virginia and the National Park Service and preserves the original site of the first permanent English settlement in the New World.

Friends of Powhatan Creek Honor Teller

As a thank you to outgoing board member Kensett Teller’s five years of service in helping to protect our natural resources in James City County, The Friends of Powhatan Creek Watershed recently planted an American Bald Cypress tree in her honor.
