Small Business Seminar Discusses State Aid The Retail Alliance will host a seminar to explain state aid to small businesses on July 21. The seminar will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. July 21 at the Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library, located at 4100 Virginia Beach Boulevard in Virginia Beach. It is the only location for the seminar in Hampton Roads. Virginia Department of Business Assistance Director Peter Su will share information about the state’s new $5 million fund to provide financing to small businesses. To qualify, the business must have fewer than 250 employees and less than $10 million in annual revenue. Admission is free. To register, contact Jen Webber at 757-455-9323 or email here. Senior Services Coalition Committee Meets Friday The Senior Services Coalition Steering Committee will meet at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the multipurpose room of Olde Towne Medical Center at the James City County Human Services Building. The next meeting for general members will be at 2 p.m. July 28 in the Williamsburg United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. The meeting will focus on the implementation of the Community Action Plan on Aging (CAPOA) recommendations. The four priority areas of CAPOA are: awareness of and access to resources; vulnerable seniors; housing and neighborhood support; and seniors as a resource. For further information, call (757) 220-3480. Williamsburg Lawyer Receives State Award Jim Knicely has been selected for the Virginia State Bar’s General Practice Tradition of Excellence Award. The award recognizes a lawyer who embodies the highest tradition of personal and professional excellence and who has benefitted a community and enhanced the esteem of general practice attorneys in Virginia. It was presented at the annual meeting on June 18 in Virginia Beach. Knicely, 64, was nominated by Robert Luther, an associate in his law firm, Knicely & Associates PC. The firm represents governments, businesses, individuals and church and religious organizations in the greater Williamsburg and Hampton Roads areas. CW Wins Ninth Emmy Colonial Williamsburg productions received two Emmy awards from the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for Colonial Williamsburg’s Electronic Field Trip, “The Bill of Rights” and “The Rights of Youth,” giving the production group its ninth Emmy since 2006. Electronic Field Trips give teachers the opportunity to take their students back in time by examining different American perspectives from the 18th century in the comfort of their own classrooms. Producer and Director Linda Randulfe, Co-producer Steven Koernig and Scriptwriter Carson Hudson accepted the Emmy for “The Bill of Rights” in the category of informational and instructional programs. It was one of five programs nominated for this category. Randulfe also produced and directed “The Rights of Youth,” which was honored with an Emmy in the informational and instructional feature segment category.
