WATA Hosts Public Meeting on Possible Fare Changes

The Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATA) will host meetings in August to gauge public opinion on possible upcoming changes to the fare program.

The first meeting will be at 5 p.m. Aug. 4 at the James River Community Center, located at 8901 Pocahontas Trail. Subsequent meetings dates have not yet been announced.

For more information, call WATA at (757) 220-5493 or click here.

Governor to Support Norment at Campaign Rally

Gov. Bob McDonnell will attend a campaign rally to reelect Sen. Tommy Norment on Aug. 14.

The rally will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Grand Oak Ballroom at Great Wolf Lodge. Drinks, light hors d’oeuvres and dessert will be served, and a cash bar will be available.

There is no admission charge for the event, but attendees are asked to RSVP here or by calling (757) 259-7810 by Aug. 8.

Wienermobile Coming to Williamsburg

The famous Oscar Mayer Wienermobile will roll into the Williamsburg area on Aug. 5 and Aug. 6 to make a stop at the KOA Campground.

The hot dog-shaped vehicle has inspired KOA owners Gary and Donna Fout to plan a weekend of hot dog-themed festivities to welcome the Wienermobile. All campers will have a chance to meet the Hotdogger team, pose for photos with the Wienermobile and enjoy a wiener roast.

Campsites and cabins will be reduced by 25 percent for that weekend. Reservations must be made in advance, and can be made here.

Williamsburg Schedules Eating Disorder Awareness Walk

The College of William and Mary’s Campus Awareness Regarding Eating Smart (C.A.R.E.S.) club is planning its second walk to support the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) for Oct. 1.

NEDA is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting those affected by eating disorders through campaigning for prevention, accessible treatment and research for these diseases. NEDA Walks are a primary fundraiser to support these efforts.

The walk will begin at 10 a.m. on Oct. 1 at the William and Mary Rec Center. Pre-registration is $20 for adults, $10 for children; day-of registration is $25 for adults and $10 for children. The fundraising team that raises the most money will receive free food from Chipotle. Gift certificates to The Blue Talon, Food for Thought and The Trellis will be raffled at the event. I recently visited Chapel Hill NC and got to use their excellent bus service. There is no charge for riding their buses. The major downtown businesses and UNC find it very cost effective to pay the transit authority for their service in order to avoid having to build numerous garages and other parking facilities. The bus routes go along the major arteries and pass near most residential neighborhoods and apartment complexes. The buses are comfortably full all day long. The service is phenomenal; an on-line web site, powered by a gps system, continually displays the time each bus will next arrive at its next stop. Electonic displays at the stops do the same. After my visit there, I wish the WATA would catch on and provide similar service.
