Community Notebook: Artists, Business Owners and Models Needed

community-notebook2Wanted: artists, business owners and pint-sized models. The Williamsburg Regional Library is seeking artists for its first open art exhibit. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance needs business owners to complete a survey on their needs. And a local dance studio needs some models for an American Girl-themed fashion show fundraiser. Read on for more details.

Williamsburg Regional Library Invites Artists for Exhibition

Williamsburg Regional Library is planning its first open art exhibit beginning in mid-September in the Williamsburg Library Gallery.

Artists interested in entering the exhibition can submit an application, downloadable here or available for pick-up at the Program Services desk of the Williamsburg Library. The application can also be submitted online here.

Works will need to be framed or mounted in a way to allow it to be hung on a wall and be appropriate for a public library space.

Business Survey Gathers Information for GA

The Virginia Department of Business Assistance is asking business owners to share their needs and concerns through an online survey.

The information collected will be used to help the General Assembly create new programs that address current business needs and have a return on investment for taxpayers. The survey results will be posted on the department’s web site in a few weeks.

The survey, which takes less than 10 minutes to complete, is available here. The survey was distributed to approximately 35,000 Virginia businesses in the department’s database. Once completed, survey takers will be entered to win a $10 Starbucks gift card. The deadline to complete the survey is Aug. 19, and the gift card winner will be announced after Aug. 22 on the department’s Facebook page.

American Girl Model Search Benefits Dance Studio

The Institute for Dance, Inc. is holding a model search for its American Girl Fashion Show, to be presented at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Nov. 19 and 20.

The model auditions will start at 9 a.m. and end at noon on Aug. 27 in Studio 2 at the dance school, located at 3356 Ironbound Road, Suite 501. Models must be a size 6x to model Bitty Baby outfits and a girl’s size 10 to model the contemporary or historical clothing line. A model application fee of $35 includes an exclusive American Girl Fashion Show T-shirt.

The fashion show will benefit the Institute for Dance, a nonprofit dance studio located on Ironbound Road in Williamsburg. Last year, more than 80 local girls participated in the show. For more information, click here, e-mail idance2011agfs@gmail.com or call 229-1717.

CW Conservator to Lecture on Restoration

A Colonial Williamsburg Foundation conservator will lecture on new conservation approaches in the program, “Conservation and the Paradox of Restoration” at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at the DeWitt Decorative Arts Museum.

John Watson, conservator of instruments and mechanical arts and associate curator of musical instruments, will talk about the special problems of preserving “objects in use” and the special challenges of restorative conservation.

A Colonial Williamsburg admissions ticket, museum pass or Good Neighbor card provides access to this lecture.

Jamestown Settlement Offers Family Tours

Families can register now for special “Family Tours” at Jamestown Settlement, to be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 11 and 16.

The Family Tour begins with a guided walking tour of the living history areas, then splits children and adults up for age-appropriate activities. Children can take part in a supervised gallery scavenger hunt and craft activity, while adults can learn about life on the ships in a program called, “Godspeed: Below Deck.”

Family Tours cost $26 for adults and $16 for children ages 4-12. It includes seven consecutive days of unlimited admission to Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center. To make reservations, call (757) 253-4939 or click here.
