Pfac's 50th anniversary student art contest
As part of a yearlong celebration of the Peninsula Fine Arts Center’s 50th Anniversary in 2012, Pfac invites local students to create and submit two-dimensional art in any media.

Artwork should mention the 50th anniversary and demonstrate the beauty, history and diversity of the area served by the Pfac, which includes the Historic Triangle as well as Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson and the counties of Gloucester and Isle of Wight. Additionally, it must be in one of three size formats: 11 x 14 inches; 16 x 20 inches; and 22 x 28 inches.

Student art will be accepted in the following categories: Kindergarten through grade 5; grade 6 through grade 8; and grade 9 through grade 12.  A panel of judges will select first, second, and third place award recipients in each age category.

All artwork must be submitted between December 6 and 10 to the Peninsula Fine Arts Center at 101 Museum Drive, Newport News. Each submission must be labeled with the student’s name, school and city/county of residence, grade, age, phone or email address, and a notation if the artwork is to be returned after being displayed.

All students must fill out an entry form, which is available by clicking here. Award recipients’ artwork will be displayed in 2012 for the 50th Anniversary year. Individual pieces of art may be selected for use in promotional materials during the year. For more information, call 596-8175.

A new trustee for Colonial Williamsburg

The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Board of Trustees has elected Leslie Anne Miller to serve as a trustee of the Foundation. Miller is an attorney in private practice specializing in alternate dispute resolution.

Miller also serves as an advisor to Michael Nutter, mayor of Philadelphia. Miller served as general counsel for the Pennsylvania Office of General Counsel, where she led a staff of 450 attorneys representing Gov. Edward G. Rendell and 32 executive and independent agencies in litigation, transactions, regulatory, legislative and criminal matters.  She was the first woman to serve as general counsel of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and also the first woman to be elected president of the Pennsylvania Bar Association.

“Leslie Miller brings an impressive record of professional accomplishment and a deep commitment to public service to her role as a Colonial Williamsburg trustee,” said Colin G. Campbell, president and CEO of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. “An advocate of programs that advance women and foster diversity in the legal profession and the business community, Leslie also has a strong interest in Colonial Williamsburg’s interpretive programs and collections.”

Miller is active in a wide variety of non-profit and cultural organizations. She is former chair of Mount Holyoke College’s Board of Trustees and a current trustee of Temple University’s Beasley School of Law, the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.  In addition, she serves on the Penn Medicine Board which administers and coordinates the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania Health System; the Free Library Foundation of Philadelphia; the Fairmount Park Conservancy; the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society; the Women’s Law Project; and the Mayor’s Cultural Advisory Council.

Miller and her husband Richard B. Worley, a senior trustee of Colonial Williamsburg, provided a generous gift to create the Leslie Anne Miller and Richard B. Worley Gallery within the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum. They also have supported interpretive education with a focus on the Revolutionary City program. They are recognized among Colonial Williamsburg’s most generous benefactors on the Foundation’s Courtyard of Philanthropy at the Visitor Center.  They reside in Bryn Mawr, Pa.
