JCC Notebook: Supes Hold Hearings on Budget, Redistricting, Planning Commission Holds Special Meeting, and more

jcc-notebook2

The county’s board of Supervisors will meet Tuesday evening, and they have several important public hearings on the schedule.

First, the Board will open a public hearing on the proposed budget. Though they’re not expected to vote on the budget until April 26, this is a chance for the public to weigh in on the proposal. Read a previous WYDaily story on the budget here, which includes a link to the budget.

Also on the agenda is a public hearing on the county’s proposed redistricting options. There were four map options submitted to the citizen redistricting committee as of last week. The committee selected Chairman Jeff Ryer’s plan, though they will meet Tuesday afternoon if they receive another map in the meanwhile (read last week’s story here and view the maps and meetings at the county’s redistricting page here). Ryer’s plan removes the two Democratic Supervisors from their districts.

Other public hearings include a revision to the noise ordinance and a continuation of the public hearing on the Cox franchise agreement (read a previous story on why the discussion on the Cox agreement was extended).

Supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in building F of the county government complex on Mounts Bay Road.

Planning Commission Special Work Session

The Planning Commission will meet for a special work session to discuss possible new Urban Development Areas in the county.

These areas were established through a state mandate and are meant to target areas appropriate for high density development and areas which should be receiving zones for Transfer of Development Rights programs, among other criteria. According to the staff memo, during the most recent Comprehensive Plan update a consultant hired by the county suggested waiting for more information on the mandate before proceeding.

At the meeting, the Commission and staff will discuss the various options for compliance with the mandate.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in building F of the county government complex on Mounts Bay Road.

County Seeking Input on Watershed Plan

The county is looking for citizen feedback on the draft of the Mill Creek Watershed Management Plan.

The watershed planning process identifies environmentally sensitive areas and develops specific protection, restoration and retrofit recommendations. This information is used to guide development within the watersheds and identifies priority water quality capital improvement projects for the County’s capital improvement program.

View the plan on the county’s Watershed Management page. Comments should be addressed to Fran Geissler and can be submitted to stormwater@james-city.va.us or can be mailed to Fran Geissler, Stormwater Director; James City County Stormwater Division; 5320 Palmer Lane, Suite 2A; Williamsburg, Virginia 23188. The deadline for sending comments is May 4.

Greensprings Trail Bridge to Close Temporarily

Regular maintenance work along the Greensprings Interpretive Trail will temporarily close the trail bridge on Friday at 8 a.m. The bridge will reopen on Monday, April 18.

The closure is needed to repair and replace deteriorating decking and rails on the long bridge of the Main Loop that crosses the Beaver Pond and wetlands which intersect with the Virginia Capital Trail. The Greensprings Interpretive Trail is located at 3751 John Tyler Highway. For more information on County parks, visit the county's parks and recreation website or call 259-5360.
