JCC Notebook: Supes Meet, Free Class, Beach ReopensFriday, May 20, 2011
Supervisors Meet The Board of Supervisors will meet on Tuesday. At their work session, Supervisors will discuss the county’s Greenspace acquisition program, which they haven’t discussed since 2002. The county has a fund balance of about $4 million for greenspace purchases and $2.5 million for Purchase of Development Rights acquisitions, and they also have funds remaining from the 2005 bond referendum. At their regular meeting, the Board will decide whether to approve a spending plan for renovations to Building D, Fire Station 4 and Mid County Park. They will also consider the watershed management plan for Gordon Creek and for Mill Creek. View the agenda for the meetings here. The Board meets for its work session at 4 p.m. and for the regular meeting at 7 p.m. Meetings are held in Building F of the county government complex on Mounts Bay Road. Free Class on Saving Money and Credit Reports James City County’s Office of Housing and Community Development is partnering with Virginia Cooperative Extension to offer “How to Make your Money Go Further” on Tuesday. The class will run from 10 until 11:30 a.m. at the James City/Williamsburg Community Center on Longhill Road, in Room C. The class will be presented by Doris Heath, an Extension Agent specializing in Family and Consumer Sciences with Virginia Cooperative Extension. Space is limited and registration is required. Call 259-5340 to reserve a space. Jamestown Beach Park Reopens Jamestown Beach Park, located across from Jamestown Settlement, will reopen on May 22 following extensive shoreline restoration work. The park features a newly restored beach front, completed through a $100,000 Living Shoreline grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust. Over the years, this popular shoreline has been adversely impacted by waves and major storm events. Restoration work included installation of an offshore breakwater and spur and sand fill work, all of which will minimize the impact of waves as they approach the shoreline. The park offers grilling opportunities and shaded picnic areas and is open all year from 8 a.m. to sunset. For more information, visit the county’s website or call 259-5360. Free Firearm Safety Class In May and June, the James City County Police Department will offer free firearm safety classes to the public. The one-session class will cover basic safety, handling, and storage. Interested adults can attend May 21, June 4, or June 18. The class will meet at the Law Enforcement Center at 5087 John Tyler Highway from 10 a.m. until noon. The class does not include hands-on training and personal firearms should be left at home in a secure location. Pre-registration is required and class size is limited. Call the James City County Police Department at 253-1800 to register. Free gunlocks are available at the class or by calling Sergeant Steve Humphries at 757-253-2481. Secondary Road Resurfacing Plan for 2011 The Virginia Department of Transportation has released the 2011 surface treatment schedule for secondary roads and subdivision roads in James City County. A complete listing of the designated roads is available online by clicking here. Surface treatment is an emulsified asphalt product designed to extend the life of asphalt pavement. Prior to surface treating a road, VDOT maintenance crews patch existing pot holes and perform any other needed maintenance. A well-constructed surface treatment can increase the life of a pavement up to seven years. In addition to sealing cracks, surface treatment provides a skid resistant surface for good wet-weather traction. For further information on the 2011 surface treatment schedule or for any maintenance concerns citizens may contact VDOT at 1-800-FOR-ROAD. |
