News from James City County this week includes a first-time homebuyer class, a class that will teach you how to save money and the police department’s Officer of the Year.

Officer of the Year

On May 25, Investigator Bill Gibbs was named James City County Police Department’s Officer of the Year for 2010 (see photo).

Investigator Gibbs has been employed with the department since 1984. The award for Officer of the Year is given to a sworn member of the police department who distinguishes himself or herself by performing their duties in a manner above that which is normally expected or required and sufficient to distinguish the individual from those performing comparable duties.

Saving Money Class

James City County’s Office of Housing and Community Development is partnering with Virginia Cooperative Extension to offer the class “How to Make Your Money Go Further” on Tuesday, June 28.

The class will run from 10 until 11:30 a.m. at the James City/Williamsburg Community Center on Longhill Road, in room C. The class will be presented by Doris Heath, an Extension Agent specializing in Family and Consumer Sciences with Virginia Cooperative Extension.

Space is limited and registration is required. Call 259-5340 to reserve a space.

First-Time Homebuyer Class

The James City County Office of Housing and Community Development will hold a “First Time Homebuyer” class on Tuesday, June 21 and Thursday, June 23.

Both classes will be held from 6 until 9 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation Administration Building, on Palmer Lane, in suite 1A.

Anyone currently purchasing a home or considering a purchase in the future will benefit from this class. Topics covered include personal finances, credit and credit scoring, qualifying and applying for a loan, choosing the right home and what happens at a loan closing.

For many applicants, the mortgage company requires them to complete a home buyer class prior to loan approval. Those who attend both sessions will receive a certificate of completion.

Space is limited. Please call 259-5340 to register.
