JCC Notebook: National Night Out, Money Management Class and MoreBy Desiree Parker Saturday, July 23, 2011
This week in James City County, the Housing and Community Development Office is holding a money management class, county residents and police are gearing up for National Night Out and voter registration information is now available online. Money Management ClassJames City County’s Office of Housing and Community Development is partnering with Virginia Cooperative Extension to offer a money management class. Titled "How to Make your Money Go Further," the class will be presented by Doris Heath, an Extension Agent specializing in Family and Consumer Sciences with Virginia Cooperative Extension. The class will be held on July 26 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the James City/Williamsburg Community Center on Longhill Road, in Room B. Space is limited and registration is required. Call 259-5340 to reserve a space. National Night Out National Night Out is coming up, and it’s a great chance for folks to raise awareness about crime prevention. On August 2, the county will join up with 15,000 other communities for the 27th annual event. National Night Out was created to raise crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for local anti-crime efforts; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. That evening, county residents are asked to lock their doors, turn on their porch lights and go outside for the evening with neighbors and police. According to the county, many neighborhoods are planning block parties and cookouts. Some neighborhoods will also get visits from James City County police and McGruff the Crime Dog. To arrange for James City County Police Officers to attend your community event, contact Master Police Officer Richard Schugeld at 253-1800 or via email at rschugeld@james-city.va.us by July 28. Check Your Voter Registration Online James City County voters can verify their current voter information online. Visit the county website and click on the “Where Do I Vote” link. Select James City County from the locality drop down box and provide the required information to retrieve personal voter record information. In addition to verifying an address, voters can view district assignments and use a link that provides directions to a polling place. It is important that local voters check their voter registration information, according to the county. Voters affected by the recent redistricting who are eligible to vote in the August 23 Republican Party Primary Election for State Senate District 3 will be sent new voter ID cards the first week of August. All other voters affected by redistricting will receive new voter ID cards later this year. Anyone without access to the internet or who cannot verify their information online should call the James City County General Registrar’s office at 253-6868.
