wmsbrgnotebook2The city will host Congressman Rob Wittman and a travel team from Rand McNally in the next few days; citizens are invited to both events. Wittman to Host Town Hall Meeting Monday

Congressman Rob Wittman will host a town hall meeting focused on the federal budget at 7 p.m. on Monday at the Williamsburg Regional Library Theatre.

“I am humbled to work in Washington, D.C. for the folks living in America’s First District, and it is important to hear from them directly,” Wittman said in a press release.

“With these meetings, we will focus on one of the most critical issues facing this nation – the country’s fiscal future. Every effort must be made to get our economy moving again and get folks back to work. The federal budget directly impacts our economy now and into the future. I look forward to the input, and encourage folks to attend to add their voice to the discussion.”

Share Opinions About Hazard Mitigation Plan

Citizens are invited to share their opinions on the 2011 Peninsula Hazard Mitigation Plan Update until June 30.

The plan is in its final phase of development and a draft is ready for review and feedback. To view the plan, click here and submit comments here.

The purpose of the plan is to provide a factual basis for prioritizing hazard mitigation activities by: identifying and profiling hazards; assessing the vulnerability of local and state critical facilities; estimating potential losses to critical facilities; and developing and prioritizing mitigation activities in each locality.

The current update has been in development since August 2010. For more information, contact Fire Chief Pat Dent at 757-220-6220 or e-mail here.

Quirks of Art Receives EDA Grant

The Williamsburg Economic Development Authority awarded an e-commerce grant to Quirks of Art, a contemporary art and handcraft gallery in High Street.

The grant paid for the business to create a new website. The grant program offers matching grants of up to $1,500 to businesses that create a website or enhance an existing website to increase sales. Owner Jennifer Raines said the grant allowed her to update her store’s website, add a shopping cart and implement search engine optimization.

The EDA created the grant program to support the City’s goal to help its businesses prosper and grow through better marketing and customer satisfaction. This is the second E-commerce grant the EDA has awarded to a creative economy business. Last year, artist Lori Jakubow used the grant to enhance her website.

Lois I am sure you did not mean it, but the word HASTY is not proper in this context. Hasty is for the most part used to describe being superficial in nature or unduly fast...as if not enough care was being taken in a fast decision.

It is mostly a pejorative. I know the Stein's and I know the issue at hand. Hasty would be the last word I would use to describe what they have been through on 1660 Richmond.

Lois and others, I am the owner of Harbour Coffee and like you share the loss of the store after being open for only a month. There were a few things not disclosed to us during our lease discussions that made continuing, after investing alot, way too risky. The landlord in VABeach did not return calls when we expressed our desire to remain but needed a new signed lease, and we felt it best to remove our expensive equipment to storage than lose it to what they may have wanted to do with the main tenant, The Spoon. We chose to vacate and not even say a word since talking about it could raise more negatives than just closing, given the short time we were there. It was our intent to change the coffee in the area. Wish we could have remained. I understand that the owner is no in financial trouble too, which may explain why they ignored our calls.

:-)
I sure hope this is a new rendition of "Kinks, Querks, and Caffeine" that fabulous store that was formerly on Jamestown Rd. I spent hours and occasional half days there, especially during holidays and when presents for friends and family were needed.

I'd especially like there to be coffee drinks, since Harbour Coffee I'd so eagerly awaited up the street, seems to have made a hasty
departure. I look forward to going there soon!!
