City Offers Cooling Assistance

Williamsburg is accepting applications for Cooling Assistance through Aug. 15 as part of the Virginia Department of Social Services’ Energy Assistance Program.

Cooling Assistance is available to households with a child under the age of 6, a person with disabilities or an adult who is 60 or older meeting the program’s income and eligibility requirements. To qualify, the maximum gross monthly income (before taxes) for a one-person household is $1,180 and $2,422 for a household of four.

Cooling Assistance includes financial aid to help with electric bills; payment of security deposits for electricity to operate cooling equipment; repair of a central air conditioning system or pump; purchase of a whole-house fan (including ceiling or attic fans); and purchase and installation of a window unit air conditioner for households without a working one.

Applications must be submitted to the Human Services Department at the Municipal Building. For more information, call 757-220-6161 or click here.

Council Hosts Public Hearing on Chesapeake Bay Requirements

The Williamsburg City Council will host a public hearing at 2 p.m. on July 14 in the Stryker Building to discuss changing the minor site plan submittal requirements and the information required on site plans.

The changes will require that site plans note that permissible development in the Resource Protection Area is limited to water dependent facilities, redevelopment or other uses allowed by zoning ordinance. The provisions relate to Chesapeake Bay preservation.

Council will meet for a work session at 4 p.m. on July 11 in the Stryker Building.
