Council to Discuss Applying to Fund Route 60 Improvements

City Council will host a public hearing on applying for grant money to pay for proposed corridor improvements to Route 60 from Williamsburg to Busch Gardens.

At the June 6 work session, architect Carlton Abbott presented a conceptual plan for improvements. The Historic Triangle Collaborative has decided to coordinate the project with Williamsburg, James City County and York County.

A committee, led by Sandy Wanner, has been formed to refine the plan. It first must seek approval from all three jurisdictions to apply for a VDOT Transportation Enhancement Grant, which is due Nov. 1.

If the project moves forward, the city would be responsible for 20 percent of the budget, which equals $894,428.50. It would be funded in the Capital Improvement Program starting in FY 13. The design and survey fees are being shared equally among the three jurisdictions.

At the same meeting, Council will receive several reports, including an updated staff recommendation to further defer the placement of the Villages of Woodshire apartments on the city’s Rental Inspection Program. In March, Council granted a six-month deferral to Great Atlantic Management, LLC to show that an increase in complaints in 2010 was due to the Nor’Easter. In late September, Harbor Group Management Company took over the complex, and in light of the management change, staff has recommended a further deferral until April.

Council will meet at 2 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Stryker Building.
