York Notebook: July Fourth Volunteers Needed, Writers Workshop and MoreMonday, June 06, 2011
The York DARE Association is looking for volunteers to assist with food service at the annual July Fourth event at Yorktown Beach. Volunteers must be over the age of 15. There are various shifts and volunteer positions available. The association will provide all volunteers with a meal, VIP parking and a great view of the fireworks display. Volunteers will be right in the middle of all activities scheduled for the celebration. This is a great opportunity to assist the DARE Program and enjoy the festivities at Yorktown Beach. If you are interested in volunteering, please call Shelley Anderson or Master Deputy Mark Medford at the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office at 890-3653. Writers Workshop The York County Public Library and the Chesapeake Bay Writers are hosting a series of free workshops titled “The Published Life: Workshops for Writers.” The goal of these workshops is to help writers successfully navigate the complex and sometimes confusing world of publishing, both before and after a book is released. “The Published Life” will address publishing components such as query letters, proposals, publishing myths and marketing. Workshops will be held on June 25, July 23 and September 10 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Yorktown Library located at 8500 George Washington Memorial Highway in Yorktown. Each session will be taught by a local published writer. The first class, “Snagging a Publisher with the Perfect Query Letter,” will be held on Saturday, June 25. Workshop participants will explore query letter, pitch and synopsis techniques to use when submitting your novel to agents and publishers. Greg Lilly, publisher and novelist, will use discussion and worksheets to lead participants through the development of these all-important selling tools. Register for the June 25 workshop online at the Chesapeake Bay Writers website. Registration is available by clicking the “Upcoming CBW Events” navigation tab. For more information on this and other library events, visit the library website or contact the Yorktown Library at 890-5207.
