York Notebook: Board Highlights, July 4 News, Protect the Bees

yorknotebook2This week's York County notebook includes what the board of supervisors will consider at their packed Tuesday meeting, Fourth of July closures at the Yorktown beach, ways to learn about the county's mosquito spraying schedule and more.

Supervisors have a packed agenda

The Yorktown Board of Supervisors will be meeting Tuesday at 6 p.m. to vote on items that will bring homes, business and art to the community. They are considering:

  • Amending the York County Zoning Map by reclassifying approximately 16.7 acres for a mixed-use development behind the Arby’s and Wendy’s on Route 17 off Fort Eustis Boulevard. Proposed is a development of 80 residential condos, 58 townhouses and duplexes, 64 rental apartments, eight “live-above” units, and at least 31,000 square feet of commercial and community space. Residential units would be priced between $200,000 and $350,000, and small businesses - like a nail salon, restaurant and specialty retail - are envisioned to fill the commercial spaces. • Authorizing a special use permit for pet cremation services within an existing building located at Penniman Road.
  • Approving $15,200 in County and State funding in support of local arts organizations for 2012. In addition, the County applied for a Local Government Challenge Grant of $5,000.

Yorktown beach picnic area to be closed July 3-5
The Beach Picnic Area at the intersection of Water and Comte de Grasse streets in Yorktown will be closed to the public beginning Sunday, July 3, through noon on Tuesday, July 5, for its use as the fireworks launching site for the annual Fourth of July Celebration in Yorktown.

The best viewing areas for the fireworks in Yorktown are at the Victory Monument and along the waterfront.

Due to the closure of the Beach Picnic Area and the large crowd expected for the event, using barbecue grills in Yorktown on July 4 is prohibited.

Visitors are also reminded that public consumption of alcohol is prohibited.

D.A.R.E. looking for volunteers
The York D.A.R.E. Association is looking for volunteers to assist with food service at the annual July 4th event at Yorktown Beach. Workers must be over the age of 15, and able to fill various positions and shifts. The bonus: volunteers will be right in the middle of all the activities with a great view of the fireworks. Volunteers also will be given a meal and VIP parking.

D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led program that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives.

If you want to help, call Shelley Anderson or Master Deputy Mark Medford at the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office at 757-890-3653.

Beekeepers asked to register for mosquito season
With mosquito season beginning, all county beekeepers are asked to register the location of their beehives to avoid potential spraying near the hives.

Beekeepers are asked to provide their name, address and phone number. Beekeepers or citizens who would like to be notified in advance of mosquito spraying should sign up online by clicking here.

To register your beehive location, call Mosquito Control at 757-890-3791. For further information on where spraying is scheduled to be conducted, you can call the mosquito hotline at 757-890-3793.
