The York County Board of Supervisors had a full agenda this past week, giving the thumbs up to the arts commission's suggestions for funding, the village's Fourth of July schedule has been announced and there are now kayak rentals at New Quarter Park. Read on for details in this notebook.
York's supervisors approved everything on their agenda, including:
The adoption of mixed-use development at the intersection of Ft. Eustis Blvd and Route 17; (Click here to learn more about that project.) the adoption of a permit that will allow a pet cremation service to be located within an existing building; appropriating $15,200 for the York County Arts Commission who will give grants to local art organizations who apply;and accepting grant money from Homeland Security and Port Authority for a new firefighting and rescue boat.
Preparing for the Fourth at Yorktown
Free public parking for the Yorktown Fourth of July Celebration will open at 3 p.m. on the Yorktown Battlefield at the Cook Road and Ballard Street intersection.
Visitors should be prepared to walk approximately one-third of a mile from the Battlefield Parking area to the Victory Monument to attend the majority of the events.
A special parking area with a golf cart shuttle service will be set aside for handicapped and special needs visitors. Those accessing this parking area must first check in to obtain a pass at Yorktown Middle School.
Operating hours for the check-in station are from 3 to 6 p.m. July 4. Free golf cart shuttle services will be available from the handicapped parking area to the Victory Monument from 3 to 10:30 p.m.
The Yorktown Trolley will provide the only means of public transportation in Yorktown on July 4. The Trolley will operate on a route that includes stops at the Yorktown Battlefield Visitor Center, the York-Poquoson Courts and Office Complex, the York County Administration Building, Main and Ballard Streets intersection, Riverwalk Landing, Watermen’s Museum and the Yorktown Victory Center. Service begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. The Yorktown Trolley is handicapped accessible and free.

Kayak Rentals at New Quarter Park
Kayaks will be available for rent at New Quarter Park for independent paddling on Queens Creek from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday through October.
Rentals include one-person kayaks, life jackets and paddles as well as assistance with launching and a map of Queens Creek. Fees for rental are $35 for a one-person kayak for two hours and $100 for a family of four or more for two hours. Kayaks are for use at New Quarter Park and on Queens Creek only. Reservations are not necessary; just show up and plan to have a fun day on the water.
The Saturday rental program is provided by York County through the Chesapeake Experience, with the goal of providing environmental education on the Chesapeake Bay. Experienced staff will be on hand to assist with kayaking tips and waterway information.
