York Notebook: Democrats Looking for Candidates, Fall Rec Signup and Business ExpoBy Sam Thrift Monday, August 08, 2011 York County residents who want to become involved in politics, sports or a business expo will have their chance this month. York-Poquoson Democrats are taking a crack at gaining candidates to challenge the current Board of Supervisors with a caucus Saturday. Residents can also register for youth soccer, adult softball and to be part of a local business expo. York-Poquoson Democrats to nominate candidates The York Poquoson Democrats will hold an assembled caucus at 10:30 a.m. Saturday to nominate candidates for the Board of Supervisors and Constitutional Offices at the Tabb Library. All Democrats registered to vote in York County or Poquoson are invited to participate. All five York County Board of Supervisors seats are up for election, as well as the Constitutional Offices. Democrat Tony Joseph has filed for the nomination for the Board of Supervisors' District 1 seat, where Walt Zaremba is the incumbent. Candidates seeking the Democratic nomination had to pre-registered by August 6. If no more than one candidate has filed for each position, the caucus will be cancelled. Youth soccer and adult softball registration Does your child want to play soccer in the fall? York County Parks and Recreation will accept registration for youth soccer now through Aug. 19 on weekdays from 8:15 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation Building, located at 100 County Drive, just off Goodwin Neck Road in the Grafton area. Fall soccer brochures are available in the public libraries, the York County website and the Parks and Recreation office. Registration will also be taking place at the Tabb Library on Aug. 17 from 4 until 7 p.m. The fee is $35 for the first child and $30 for each additional child per family. Leagues include coed and girls from Kindergarten to 12th-graders. League play begins on Sept. 10. For additional information, please call York County Parks and Recreation at 890-3500. Adult fall softball program registration will begin at 8:15 a.m. today for existing teams. New teams may begin registering at 8:15 a.m. Aug. 15. Fall softball will consist of a men’s league on Monday evenings and a coed league on Friday evenings. Traditionally, leagues have been limited to 12 teams maximum. If four to eight more teams register and are able to play Tuesday or Thursday evenings, an additional league will be formed. The fall softball registration fee is $300 per team and is taken on a first come, first served basis. Registration must be done in person at the Parks and Recreation office at 100 County Drive in Grafton. This program is open to residents and non-residents. Interested individuals not affiliated with a team can be placed on the pool list. For more information call York County Parks and Recreation at 890-3500. Take part in an expo for local businesses The York County Office of Economic Development is currently seeking businesses and companies interested in being exhibitors at the 2011 York BIZ Expo on Sept. 24 at the York Middle Boys & Girls Club located within Yorktown Middle School. The expo will feature several panel sessions, breakout workshops and a keynote speaker who will focus on how to successfully start or expand small businesses. Well over 150 attendees are expected, which will provide maximum exposure for exhibitors. The expo is one facet of the county’s York Business Improvement Zone program, a comprehensive outreach program designed to provide new and existing businesses with the information and resources they need to thrive and grow. The program strives to capitalize on existing business resources available through the county and other local, state and private organizations. Exhibition fees are $100 per table.
