York Notebook: Refresh Your Fescue, Court Day and Trash PickupBy Sam Thrift Monday, September 12, 2011 Find out about trash pickup, lawn care and how you can spend a day learning some local history at the Yorktown Victory Center this weekend in York County.Court Day in Yorktown Music, magic, juggling, puppet shows, period games and trade activities highlight “Court Day” at the Yorktown Victory Center Sept. 17. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Court Day will offer a glimpse of recreation, entertainment and trade activities that took place when court was in session during the 18th century. Demonstrations will range from artillery to spinning wool and include period games such as whirligigs, trap ball, hoops, ninepins, Graces and cricket. American cricket player and historian Tom Melville will show visitors how to play the centuries-old game throughout the day and fiddler David Gardner will perform popular music of the time. Admission is $9.50 for adults and $5.25 for youth ages six through 12. Various package and ticket options are available online with Williamsburg area attractions. Event activities are funded in part by a leadership grant from Dominion Resources, with additional support provided by the York County Arts Commission. Parking is free. A free shuttle service is available during museum operating hours to historic Yorktown and other Williamsburg area attractions. The York County Office of the Virginia Cooperative Extension will be holding its last free lawn maintenance clinics Sept. 17 at the Grafton True Value Hardware on Route 17 in Yorktown. Incorporating organic matter, rake level, and seed selection will be discussed. The class is held from 10 a.m. to noon and anyone can register by calling 890-4940, which is the York County Office of the Virginia Cooperative Extension at 890-4940. Planning Commission Agenda The York County Planning Commission will be voting Sept. 14 to amend conditions on a the previously approved planned development, the Cherry Tree Villas, to be constructed on approximately 7.2 acres of land located at the intersection of Duncan and Fillmore Drives. This planned development of single-family detached homes was approved in 2007 under the Affordable Housing Incentive Provisions of the Zoning Ordinance. The current developer is requesting changes to the conditions of approval, including an increase in the maximum house size from 1,450 to 1,800 square feet of living space and reducing the minimum side yard setbacks from 10 to 7.5 feet. Meetings are held at York Hall, begin at 7 p.m. and are open to the public. Trash pickup, dropoff back to normal The Waste Management Center, including the VPPSA Composting Facility and drop-off centers for garbage and recycling, has resumed normal operating hours after a weekend of closures and irregular hours. Normal operating hours are 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. for the Transfer Station and Citizen Drop-off Areas for Garbage and Recycling and 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. for the VPPSA Composting Facility. |
