York Notebook: Peers Elect Diggs, Biz Expo Coming UpBy Sam Thrift Monday, September 19, 2011 York County and City of Poquoson Sherriff Danny Diggs was elected president of the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association last week. Also, York County is hosting an expo with workshops to help improve your business.Diggs becomes President of VSA The members of the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association unanimously elected Danny Diggs, Sheriff of York County and the City of Poquoson, to serve a one-year term as president of the Association Sept. 12. The Virginia Sheriffs’ Association is the professional trade association representing the interests of law enforcement and the sheriffs’ offices in Virginia. The association has 8,600 members. "I am honored to have been selected by the membership of the VSA to serve as their president,” Diggs said in a press release. “I look forward to serving and hope that together we can be successful in addressing the various issues facing Sheriffs." Nearly 250 sheriffs, deputy sheriffs and special guests from across Virginia attended the 78th Annual Conference of the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association held in Norfolk. Also represented at the conference were over 80 professional exhibitors displaying the latest crime-fighting equipment and keynote speakers from the Virginia House of Delegates and the Virginia Senate. Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli also addressed the association and administered the oath of office to the incoming officers. The Virginia Sheriffs’ Association acts as the primary voice for Virginia sheriffs in the General Assembly on all matters relating to public safety. Business Expo The York County Office of Economic Development is currently seeking businesses and companies interested in being exhibitors at the 2011 York BIZ Expo on Sept. 24 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Yorktown Middle Boys & Girls Club, located within Yorktown Middle School. The expo will consist of several panel sessions, breakout workshops, and a keynote speaker. Registration is free and includes light morning refreshments, lunch and snacks. The sessions include a Professional Services Panel that will focus on business insurance, legal matters, and budgeting and bookkeeping; a Public Resources Panel that will discuss state and local grant programs, zoning and land use, and business licensing; and several afternoon breakout sessions on Quickbooks, Marketing, and Selling to the Government. Well over 150 attendees are expected, which will provide maximum exposure for exhibitors. The exhibition is free and open to the public. For more information and online registration click here.
