York Notebook: Mosquito Spraying, Flu Shots and a White ElephantBy Sam Thrift Monday, October 03, 2011 In this week's York Government Notebook, find out when aerial spraying for mosquitos will happen, where you can get your art fix for the week and how you can help the Senior Center by donating and attending their event this weekend.Aerial spray to combat mosquitoes Langley Air Force Base will be conducting an aerial spray flight for mosquitoes starting today. The plane will spray the last two hours of daylight through Oct. 5 and depart on Oct. 6. The spray area plan is as follows: Monday - Langley, Poquoson & York County Tuesday – Newport News, Ft Eustis & Naval Weapons Station Wednesday - Portsmouth, Craney Island and York County if not finished Monday. Market Days features artists Yorktown Market Days began this year’s season in May with more than 30 vendors offering fresh produce, meat and seafood, gourmet herbs and spices, organic items, plants, baked goods, cut flowers, pasta, sauces, herbal soaps and lotions and more. Located on the banks of the York River between Buckner and Ballard Streets, the markets continue this fall and holiday months on Saturdays, Oct. 8, Nov. 12, and Dec. 10 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in October and November, and 8 a.m. to noon in December. More than 25 local artists are participating in the 2011 season, offering one-of-a-kind quality art for sale. Featured artists in the upcoming markets include: Mike Kravchak (watercolors), Kelly Provo (acrylic painting and collages), Rob Ingalls (photography), Seth Fisher (photography), Tammy Bacot (jewelry), Kim Steele (jewelry), Lynn McPherson (seashell art and custom Santa), Barbara Dowdy (stained glass), Marilyn West (folk art pendants, paintings and birdhouses), Ray Doolan (dried flower art), Peggy McCabe (jewelry), Paige Joyner (dog coats and beds/knitted items),Tina McCloud (watercolors, jewelry), Emily Krapf (photography), Goesel Woodshop (wood toys), Lori Weiner (fabric art), and Jean Thompson (wine bottle cheese trays). Free parking is available in several public parking areas throughout historic Yorktown. There are no rain dates are scheduled for the Market Days. Flu shots for seniors Flu shot season is back, so remember to mark your calendars to register for your annual flu shot. Registration for York County seniors who wish to receive a flu shot starts at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at the Senior Center, 5314 George Washington Memorial Highway. The flu shots will be administered on Friday, Oct. 28 from 9 to 11 a.m. No fee or Medicare billing will be involved. Participation is open to seniors age 55 or better and their spouses, regardless of age. Reservations are required for all sessions and are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Senior Center readies for annual White Elephant The York County community can donate and participate in the Senior Center of York’s 2011 White Elephant, Bake Sale and Craft Fair on Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event will be held at the Senior Center, located at 5314 George Washington Memorial Highway, in the Washington Square Shopping Center in Grafton. All proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the Senior Center. Donations, such as household items, crafts, and articles other than clothing, may be delivered to the Center Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bake sale items (baked goods only) such as bread, cake, pie, brownies and cookies may be delivered Friday from noon to 4 p.m., or on the day of the sale at 8:30 a.m. The craft fair will feature a wide array of crafts, including knitting, crocheting, paintings and more. Tickets can also be purchased for a chance to win some great door prizes. Those donating items for the sale are asked to tag their items with suggested prices.
