York Notebook: Voter Registration, Victory at Yorktown and MoreBy Sam Thrift Monday, October 17, 2011 Today is the last day to register to vote, learn what the Board of Supervisors are discussing this week and find out what is closed in York County for the victory at Yorktown anniversary celebration. Read on for more York County updates.Voter deadline is here Today is the last day to register to vote for the Nov. 8 general election and there are many candidates to consider on Election Day. Visit the WYDaily election page to learn about all 44 candidates in the Historic Triangle by clicking here. Today is also the deadline for registered voters who need to change their address. Voters can do so by completing, signing and submitting a voter registration application or voter card. For more information on where to register or how to vote absentee, call the Registrar’s Office at 890-3440 or click here. Board of Supervisors agenda The Board of Supervisors will be meeting tomorrow night and are discussing: - The possibilities for landscaping improvements along a 4-mile long segment of the Route 60 corridor between Capitol Landing Road and the Grove interchange entrance to Busch Gardens. The conceptual plan for the corridor improvements has been completed, cost estimates have been prepared, and funding opportunities have been identified. The board will be discussing grants to help with the cost of the plan, which is estimated to be $4,487,691. - The federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000, which requires localities to update their hazard mitigation plan every five years. FEMA defines mitigation as “the effort to reduce loss of life and property by lessening the impact of disasters.” York County partnered with other localities to develop an initial regional hazard mitigation plan in order to continue to be eligible for pre- and post-disaster hazard mitigation funding from FEMA. - Approval for the procurement of the study and design of drainage improvements for Dare Elementary School, which has been had many issues since Hurricane Irene (click here to read the latest). After looking at proposals from nine firms, negotiations were conducted with the chosen firm, the Williamsburg Environmental Group. Read the full agenda by clicking here. Closings for the victory at Yorktown anniversary York County offices will be closed Oct. 19 in observance of Yorktown Day, the anniversary of the victory at Yorktown. County offices, York County Public Libraries and York-Poquoson Social Services will be closed that day, along with the county’s Waste Management Center offices. The General District Court, Circuit Court and Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court will be open. Collection of garbage and recyclables will not be affected by the holiday. The compost facility and transfer station located on Goodwin Neck Road will be open. Speaker on Battle of Yorktown Journalist and historian Marc Leepson will give a talk at 1 p.m. on Oct. 19, at York Hall about his latest book, “ Lafayette: Lessons in Leadership from the Idealist General.” The book, Leepson’s seventh, is a concise biography of the Marquis de Lafayette, the renowned Frenchman who commanded a division of Continental Army troops at the Battle of Yorktown. History detectives wanted The York County Historical Committee is searching for individuals with an interest in the Civil War or any part of the 400 years of York County history.
