York Notebook: Meeting on Aqua-Agriculture, Halloween Hours, History Hunt and More

The York County Planning Commission put together a special committee of citizens and planning commissioners to discuss aquaculture and agriculture. Also, find out county rules and safety tips for the spookiest night of the year and learn about how to contribute your family documents to the history of York County. Halloween in York County
This year’s hours for trick-or-treating in York County will be from dusk until 8 p.m. today.

Children age 12 or younger may trick-or-treat and should be accompanied by an adult. Residents are asked to turn on porch lights to identify homes that wish to receive trick-or-treaters.

To ensure a safe Halloween experience, the York County Department of Fire and Life Safety and the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office recommend a few safety tips, which you can find by clicking here.

Planning Commission Aquaculture meeting
The York County Planning Commission’s committee to review the proposed Zoning Ordinance text amendments pertaining to aquaculture and agriculture use will hold a meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday in York Hall.

History Hunt is on
The York County Hunt for History event will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Seaford Elementary School in an effort compile local history.

Archivists from the York County Historical Museum will be available to digitally copy family letters, photos, diaries, hand-drawn maps and other family documents of historical significance. Items should be originals and owned by the individual presenting the materials.

Remembering the forgotten in New Quarter Park
New Quarter Park will remember its roots on Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. until noon when African-American historian Robert Watson will lead “Walk and Talk: Remembering the Forgotten.”

Watson will remember the slaves who toiled on the land when New Quarter was an outlying farm attached to Carter’s Grove plantation. The program will be held on a bluff where archaeologists have uncovered a pre-1750 structure that was probably part of the farm overseer’s house.
