York Notebook: Thanksgiving Closings, Leaf Pickup Dates, Emergency Training

yorknotebook2Find out what will be closed in York County during the Thanksgiving holiday and when the county will pick up those extra leaves your yard has gathered during the change in season. Read on to find out all the information you need to know to prepare for the holiday.

Thanksgiving closings in York County
Wednesday:
Public libraries will close at 5 p.m.; County courts will close at noon; Virginia Cooperative Extension will close at noon.

Closed Thursday and Friday: County government offices, public libraries, social services, Virginia Cooperative Extension, all courts, Waste Management Center administration.

Open Friday
Transfer Station and Compost Facility

Garbage collection normally scheduled for Thursday, will be collected on Friday. Garbage collection normally scheduled for Friday, will be collected Saturday. Recycling collection normally scheduled for Thursday, will be collected on Saturday.

Leaf pickup

Beginning last week and running through the week of Jan. 23, York County residents can place an unlimited number of clear bags of leaves in front of their homes for collection every other week.

For leaf collection purposes, the county is divided into two zones:

The Northern Zone includes all homes on and north of Dare Road: neighborhoods along Wolf Trap Road, Goodwin Neck Road, and homes in and near Marlbank, Edgehill, Queens Lake, Skimino and Nelson Park.

Collection weeks for the Northern Zone will be: Nov. 21, Dec. 5, Jan. 2, Dec. 19, Jan. 16 and Jan. 30.

The Southern Zone includes all homes south of Dare Road: neighborhoods in Tabb, Coventry, Kiln Creek, Brandywine and Harwood Landing.

Collection weeks for the Southern Zone will be: Nov. 14, Dec. 12, Jan. 9, Nov. 28, Dec. 26, Jan. 23 and Jan. 30.

Leaves must be in clear bags and have to weigh less than 40 pounds. Bags must be at the front roadside by 7 a.m. on the Monday of the collection week. Pickup will be completed by the end of the week. For additional information, please call 890-3780.

Thanksgiving bird walk
Members of the Williamsburg Bird Club are inviting York County residents and their Thanksgiving guests for a weekend bird walk this Saturday.

The fall walk will begin at 7 a.m. and will be led by Bill Williams, Bird Club member and director of education with the College of William and Mary Center for Conservation Biology.

Sign up for spring CERT training
Applications are currently being accepted to register for the York County Community Emergency Response Team training course next spring.

CERT training provides citizens the opportunity to be better prepared for family emergencies and to help their neighborhood if York County is affected by major emergencies or disasters.

Those interested in participating in York's CERT training program should be prepared to make a commitment to one night a week - typically Thursday - from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and two Saturday mornings over an approximately two-month period.
