York Notebook: New Board Leadership, Plans for Housing Near Kiln CreekBy Sam Thrift Monday, January 09, 2012 The Board of Supervisors has selected a chair and vice chair, along with rules and procedures for 2012, and the Planning Commission will hear an application for a mixed-use development near Kiln Creek. Read on below for more details.Board of Supervisors The Board of Supervisors chose their 2012 chair and vice chair on Jan. 3. The group elected District 5 Supervisor Tom Shepperd as chair. “Tom Shepperd is a great choice [as chair] because of his commitment to all of the York County citizens, rather than special interest groups,” District 1 Supervisor Walt Zaremba said. District 2 Supervisor Shelia Noll will be Vice Chair, a position previously held by Tom Shepperd. The group also voted on their rules and procedures for 2012. The time and place for regular meetings will remain the same, with meetings starting at 6 p.m. in York Hall on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Planning Commission agenda The Planning Commission will hear a request to amend the York County Zoning Map on Wednesday to reclassify 45.9 acres of land so a mixed-used development can be built. The land is located at the end of Commonwealth Drive on the east side of the York County, bordering the City of Newport News. The land is near the Regal Kiln Creek Stadium 20 movie theater, a mile from Victory Boulevard. It will encompass the area bounded by Route 17. According to the memorandum, the amendment would change the land labeled as Economic Opportunity — which is land designated for retail, tourist-related businesses and limited industrial activities — to Planned Development Mixed Use for the purpose of establishing a mixed-use development. The development will consist of a maximum of 334 rental apartments, 94 townhouses, 16 “live-above” rental units, and a minimum of 40,610 square feet of commercial space.
