Continue reading below to find out more.Presidents Day closings York County government offices will be closed Feb. 20 for Presidents Day. This includes: All Courts, County Offices, York Poquoson Social Services, Virginia Cooperative Extension, York County Libraries and the Waste Management Center. Garbage and recycling collection, as well as drop-off facilities at the Waste Management Center, will be operating on a normal schedule. For more information on the holiday schedule, call the Public Information Office at 890-3300. Presidential Primary registration Today is the last day to register to vote in the March 6 Republican Presidential Primary. Registered voters who need to change their address may do so by completing, signing and submitting a voter registration application or their voter card. The deadline to change registration information is also today. All York County polling places will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on March 6. Absentee voting is available for those who will be out of their precinct on March 6, those who are unable to go to their polling place because of an illness or disability, and those who otherwise qualify to vote an absentee ballot. The deadline to apply to vote absentee by mail, email, or fax is 5 p.m. on Feb. 28. The deadline to apply to vote absentee in person is 5 p.m. on March 3. Unofficial statewide election results – including York County election results – will be available at www.sbe.virginia.gov as they are reported after the polls close March 6. Recruiting for Yorktown Battlefield volunteers The National Park Service is looking for volunteers to help at the Yorktown Battlefield. Volunteers will provide historical interpretation and visitor services at the Moore House, Nelson House and Yorktown National Cemetery Lodge. In preparation for observances of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War Peninsula Campaign, the Lodge in the National Cemetery will house exhibits and a contact station, beginning in April. Sheriff Scholarship The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications for the Virginia Sheriffs’ Institute Scholarship program. The Virginia Sheriffs’ Scholarship program was established to provide an opportunity for young people across Virginia to pursue an educational curriculum in criminal justice. The scholarships are available to students in York County and the City of Poquoson. This program is limited to students attending Virginia colleges and universities. Historic Yorktown Design Committee Update The Feb. 15 meeting of the Historic Yorktown Design Committee has been cancelled since no applications have been submitted.
