Amherst County Shuts Down Tabb 34-0 in Opener

YORK – Tabb came out fired up for its season-opener, but as the late summer sun set behind the visiting grandstand, so did any hopes for the Tigers to pull out a victory.

The visiting Lancers, who were last year’s state runners-up, were too much for Tabb in a 34-0 victory Friday night at Bailey Field.

Amherst starting scoring early, when the speedy Demitri Carter stormed out of the backfield for a 67-yard score with a minute not yet elapsed from the game clock.

Later in the first, another Amherst tailback surprised the Tabb defense by throwing the ball to a wide-open Jaze Spradley.  Brown would prove a big factor in the game’s outcome, having a hand in three of Amherst’s four touchdowns on the day.

On the Tabb side of the ball, sophomore Daniel Schiele made his first varsity start. Although he showed some poise, it was clear that he was not used to the speed of the varsity game.

Schiele, who last year didn’t dress for last year’s 66-12 loss to Amherst agreed after the game.

“I started out a little antsy,” said Schiele, who went 4-for-12 passing for 33 yards. “They were a very fast team. I learned a lot.”

Perhaps another reason Tabb couldn’t get into the game was their penchant to give up the big play.  Three of Amherst’s four touchdowns came on plays that went for over 60 yards.

“We can’t give away big plays like that,” Tabb coach Matt Lawson said. “On the flip side, that means we were able to stop them some.”

Lawson’s team will not play again until Sept. 17 when they open up their league schedule, facing hometown rival York High back at Bailey field.

Given two weeks to prepare, Lawson said he plans to add depth by “getting some reps for some guys who are almost ready [to play varsity].”

When asked how he thought the Bay Rivers District would pan out, Lawson simply said, “It’s wide open.”
