Area High School Football Previews for Weekend of Sept. 9Thursday, September 09, 2010 Five Bay Rivers District teams opened play last weekend. The other five kick off their season with non-district games this weekend, starting with Warhill’s game against Windsor on Thursday. Windsor at WarhillWHEN: 7 p.m. Thursday WHERE: Sanford B. Wanner Stadium, James City RECORDS: Windsor 1-0 (Beat Nansemond-Suffolk Academy 20-15 on Sept. 3), Warhill 0-0 (2-8 last season) QUICK READ: After going 0-20 in its first two years of existence, Warhill earned its first victory in school history by beating Windsor 14-13 in last season’s opener. … Warhill senior Shaun Cvengros returns to quarterback after spending last year at wide receiver. He started at quarterback as a freshman. … Keep an eye on 6-foot-5, 230-pound center Teddy West. “He’s probably one of the best centers I’ve had,” Cvengros said. “He knows what I’m going to do and everything else. We’re on the same page this year. Our line has gotten a lot better all the way around. Teddy’s taken that charge.” … Junior R.J. Edwards came through in the clutch for Windsor against NSA with a 78-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and a pass breakup on the game’s final play.
Surry County at Grafton WHEN: 7 p.m. Friday WHERE: Bailey Field, York RECORDS: Surry County 0-1 (Lost 45-6 to Smithfield on Sept. 3), Grafton 0-0 (4-6 last season) QUICK READ: Jared Van Acker makes his debut as Grafton’s coach after posting an 11-19 record in three seasons at Group A Galax in Southwestern Virginia. … The key for the Clippers is keeping quarterback Joe Cibrin healthy. The 6-foot-4 senior led the Bay Rivers District with 106.8 passing yards per game last season, but missed four games due to injury. … Surry was limited to just 106 yards of total offense in its home loss to Smithfield.
Brunswick County at Lafayette WHEN: 7 p.m. Friday WHERE: Sanford B. Wanner Stadium, James City RECORDS: Brunwick 0-0 (5-5 last season), Lafayette 0-0 (5-5 last season) QUICK READ: Lafayette senior Brandon Jones (927 yards and seven touchdowns on 165 carries last season) is one of the top returning running backs in the district. … The Rams needed three second-half touchdowns last season to rally for a 20-14 victory over Brunswick. Jones rushed for 113 yards on 20 carries in the win. … Lafayette coach Paul Wheeler (190-64 in 23 years as a head coach) is 10 victories away from 200 for his career.
New Kent at King William WHEN: 7 p.m. Friday WHERE: King William High School RECORDS: New Kent 0-0 (1-9 last season), King William 1-0 (Won 14-12 at Essex on Sept. 2) QUICK READ: Lewis Redman went 9-for-20 passing for 101 yards as King William edged Division 2 state champion Essex 14-12 last Thursday. Redman completed all 11 passes in last season’s 27-13 victory at New Kent.
Norfolk Christian at Hampton Roads Academy WHEN: 7 p.m. Friday WHERE: Hampton Roads Academy, Newport News RECORDS: Norfolk Christian 2-0, Hampton Roads Academy 1-0 QUICK READ: Norfolk Christian outscored its first two opponents (Covenant and Portsmouth Christian) 104-33. … HRA delivered new coach Bryce Kiser his first victory last Friday night, 29-10 at Chincoteague. Ty Smith exploded for 185 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.
Jamestown at John Marshall WHEN: 1 p.m. Saturday WHERE: John Marshall High, Richmond RECORDS: Jamestown 0-0 (6-4 last season), John Marshall 0-0 (5-5 last season) QUICK READ: Jamestown fared well at Group AAA John Marshall last season with a 14-13 season-opening victory in overtime. … Eagles coach Ryan Turnage hopes senior Marquis Greenhow can fill the void at running back left by Evan Moog (1,390 yards, eight touchdowns). Greenhow missed last season due to injury.
