Warhill Sets School Record with 45-20 Rout of Windsor

JAMES CITY – For the past three years, Shaun Cvengros trudged off the field looking at the wrong side of a crooked scoreboard.

After only two wins and countless lopsided defeats the past three seasons, the Warhill senior quarterback finally experienced his first runaway victory Thursday night at Sanford B. Wanner Stadium. Cvengros passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as Warhill routed Windsor 45-20 in its season-opener.

“I’ve been looking forward to this for three years,” Cvengros said.

Warhill shattered the school record for most points in a game – set in a 63-28 loss to Lafayette on Oct. 31, 2008. They only scored 39 points in their first season in 2007.

The Lions (1-0) won a 14-13 nail-biter in last season’s meeting with Windsor only after blocking an extra-point attempt in the final minutes. With 27 seniors on this season’s roster, Warhill expected to see some improvement coming off a 2-8 season.

But this good?

“We had a pretty good idea we were going to put up points,” said Cvengros, who went 7-for-15 passing for 92 yards and two touchdowns. “But I didn’t think we would break 40. It’s definitely a great feeling with how our offense is clicking.”

Cvengros helped the Lions break the game open in the second quarter with a pair of touchdown passes to fellow senior Zack Osgood.

“Shaun he had good protection,” Warhill coach Billy Jarvis said. “We can throw the football down the field.”

Cvengros had plenty of time on his first touchdown pass to connect with Osgood for a 15-yard score on a beautiful fade route to tie the game 14-all. Just over two minutes later, Cvengros found his longtime teammate crossing the middle for a 14-yard score. The two have played football together for the past 11 years.

“I think Coach (Jarvis) had a great idea of moving me back to quarterback and him back to receiver,” said Cvengros, who started at quarterback as a freshman. “I think it’s paid off for the whole team.”

Cvengros also rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.

That wasn’t the only offensive highlight for Warhill, which racked up 375 yards of total offense.

Freshman Reggie Lipscomb caught four passes for 82 yards.

Senior Randall Owens tacked on touchdown runs of 14 and 9 yards in the third quarter as the Lions built a 45-14 lead.

“I’m happy for the kids,” Jarvis said. “I’m older. I want to win, but I’ve been around a while. I just know how it is for them to experience the happiness of winning a game.”
