Rams Run Past Rival Jamestown in Boys Basketball

Cross-town rivals Lafayette and Jamestown high’s boys basketball squads met for the second and final time Wednesday night and as usual, it was a physical contest as Lafayette used a 32-point fourth quarter to run past the Eagles, 79-57.

After a lackluster first period that saw Lafayette lead 13-8, both teams' offense picked up its game as the teams combined for 32 points, 18 for the Rams (12-6, 12-4 BRD), who took a 31-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Both squads seemed to have a renewed vigor to start the second half as the Eagles (3-15. 2-14 BRD) scored two three-pointers on back-to-back possessions. The Rams however, countered with a bucket by Colton St. Cyr, followed up with an offensive rebound by John Fitchett who jammed home the rebound off of St. Cyr’s missed three. Fitchett promptly came down after the second of two three’s by James Laycock with a three-pointer of his own. All of it happened within the first two minutes of the third quarter.

Jamestown outscored Lafayette 17-16 in the third, but the Rams dominated the fourth quarter, pouring in 32 to the Eagles' 18.

Jamestown trailed 47-39 after three and cut the lead to six, 50-44, with 6:15 left in the final period on another Laycock three-ball. That would be as close as the Eagles would get. The Rams answered any attempt by Jamestown to cut into the lead as Lafayette hit 10 fourth period field goals and sank 11 of 15 free throws.

Lafayette’s Dewayne Johnson was a dominant force inside, finishing with 19 points, 10 in the fourth, to go along with seven rebounds. Fitchett also finished with 19 points and St. Cyr added 16.

The Eagles were led by Rodney Smith with 17 points and Laycock scored all 10 of his in the second half.

“We switched back to a man to man from a zone in the second half and were able to force some turnovers that turned into some easy buckets,” Lafayette Assistant Coach Ben Etheridge said. “We were able to hit some three’s and grab a lot of offensive rebounds and we hit our free throws.”

“They grabbed a lot of offensive rebounds and turned them into points,” Eagles Head Coach Lee Underwood said. “It turned into a physical game, which doesn’t help us as they are bigger than we are.”
