Lafayette Boys Dominate Bay Rivers District Track and Field Meet; Jamestown takes Girls’ Crown

Melvin Jones has coached dozens off elite runners during his 39 years with Lafayette’s track and field program. But when asked where this year’s team falls in the ranks of his all-time greats, the veteran coach had trouble thinking of one that compared.

The Rams had an outstanding showing at the Bay Rivers Track and Field district meet held at the Boo Williams Sportsplex Monday. Their 189 total points were over 100 more than second-place York (82), and the most Jones could recall any of his teams scoring in “a long time.”

“I’ve been at [Lafayette] since it was built, and top-to-bottom, this could be the best track team ever (in school history),” said Jones, who won a AA state title in 2005 and has finished runner-up at the state meet twice. “We had quality times, quality jumps and quality relays today. I was very proud.”

Jones said his team got a major confidence boost after their impressive win at the Hampton Roads Elite High School Showcase two weeks ago, in which the Rams competed against mostly AAA schools such as Ocean Lakes, Kellam, I.C. Norcom and Landstown.

“After that we were like, ‘wow, maybe we can run with the big dogs,’” Jones said. “That was sort of like a dress rehearsal for today, and our confidence level was sky high coming out of that meet.”

The Rams’ Desmond Smallwood, who was named Bay Rivers Track and Field MVP, was the biggest standout, winning both of his events- the 55 meter in 6.61 seconds and the 300 meter in 35.89.

Teammate Michael Sonnek also won two events, the 55 meter hurdles and triple jump.

Christoff Samuels, Aaron Hooks, Brandon Poller and Smallwood anchored a record-setting pace in the 4x200-meter relay for Lafayette. They finished the event in 1:32.07, which Jones said is the second-fastest time in school history.

On the girls’ side, the Rams’ Heidi Peterson, who was a dual winner in the 1600 (5:19.55) and 3200 (12:17.37), earned MVP honors, although it was Jamestown that took home the team crown.

The Eagles’ balance proved to be slightly better than a talented Tabb team as Jamestown edged the Tigers 305-99.5. Tabb’s Brittni King joined Lafayette’s Peterson as the only other individual to win multiple events. King finished first in the 300 and 500 while teammates Micah Hanks and Taylor Omweg  came in second back-to-back. Hanks also placed second in the 55-meter (7.41) behind Lafayette’s Krista Ferrell (7.37).

But the Eagles consistently placed one or two runners in each event while collecting a chunk of their points in the field events. Shelby Hamm finished first in the pole vault, and Brianna Sutton (first), Amy Pressey (second) and Elizabeth Henry (fourth) all finished in the top four to snag 22 points for Jamestown in the shot put.

Marissa Segala, Shannon Bryce, Gaylin Glueck, Madisen Kopfer, Hayley Simonson and Devon and Tia Mearns all ran well and placed in their events for Jamestown.

Below are the team results followed by the top six finishers in each event who will move on to next week’s Region I meet, which will also be held at the Boo Williams Sportsplex next Wednesday (Feb. 15).
