Game On: Grafton Boys, Girls Sweep Top Honors on All-Bay Rivers Hoops Teams

GameOnWill

Grafton High, which captured both the boys and girls Bay Rivers District basketball titles as well as the girls’ district-tournament championship, was a fixture on the all-district teams that were announced after this weekend’s championship games.

The Clippers’ Rose Mulherin, who led the district in scoring at roughly 19 points per contest, was named the girls’ Player of the Year with sophomore teammate Olivia Wilson joining her on the first team. Sophomore Hannah Olson also earned a spot on the second team, while Grafton’s coach, Tommy Bayse, was named Coach of the Year.

Tabb’s Emily Piazza, Warhill’s Alexis Petrin and Bruton’s Amber Warner rounded out the remaining first-team selections.

Grafton Junior Elijah Moore earned boys’ Player of the Year honors after leading the Clippers to their first-ever Bay Rivers district title this season and back-to-back tournament championships the past two years. Moore averaged right around 20 points per game and was usually good for a double-double as well averaging right around 10 rebounds a night.

Grafton senior Kevin Barnes (14ppg) joined Moore on the first team, and fellow senior Blake Ream garnered second-team honors.

Clippers’ coach Jeremy Jordan got the nod for coach of the Year. After a 5-17 campaign in Jordan’s first year with the program, the third-year coach has guided the Clippers to back-to-back tournament titles while winning 24 of his last 25 district contests.

Last season’s POY, Tabb’s Shaq Rodney, joined Moore as the only players to be named to the first team consecutive years. Bruton sophomore Marcus Carter, Lafayette senior Colton St. Cyr, Smithfield’s Darren Major and Warhill sophomore Devonte Dedmond were all selected for the first time.

The Grafton boys won their Bay Rivers District tournament, but the ladies from Smithfield won the girls BRD tournament.
