Recapping a busy weekend in high school boys and girls basketball. BOYS BASKETBALL (From Friday) Bruton 62 Grafton 61 Bruton’s Kapri Doucet banked in the game winner for the Panthers (11-2, 9-2 Bay Rivers) as they crept right back into the district title hunt by dealing the Clippers (11-2, 10-1 Bay Rivers) their first Bay Rivers loss of the season. Lonnie Swinton scored 14 of his team-high 16 points in the third quarter for Bruton. Clippers’ star forward Elijah Moore scored a game-high 31 points and also pulled down 14 rebounds. Read More Lafayette 69 Smithfield 58 Ben Colley led four Rams in double figures with 16 points as Lafayette (10-4, 10-2 Bay Rivers) won their fourth straight. With Bruton’s victory over first-place Grafton, Lafayette remains a half-game game up on the Panthers for second place and a game back of the Clippers for first. Colton St. Cyr and Dewayne Johnson each finished with 14 points, and forward John Fitchett added 13. Darren Major, the district’s leading scorer at over 20ppg, led Smithfield with 27. York 77 Jamestown 52 Brandon Harvell netted a game-high 24 points and Chase Gibson scored 13 as the Falcons (3-11, 2-10 Bay Rivers) handed Jamestown its 12th straight loss. Rodney Smith scored seven points to lead 11 different players who scored for the Eagles (1-13, 0-12 Bay Rivers). Tabb 57 Poquoson 42 The Tigers jumped out to a 34-18 lead at halftime and never looked back. Juniors Daniel Schiele (15 points) and Kaleb Mitchell (10 points) led the way for Tabb (8-4 Bay Rivers), winners of four of their last five. Williamsburg Christian Academy 85 Denbigh Baptist 32 Jake Duncan led all scorers with 22 points and Joe Treacy finished with a 16-point 10-rebound double-double as WCA cruised past Denbigh Baptist. Mark Seaman added 15 points and Deron Powers chipped in with six points, eight rebounds and four steals for the Eagles (13-5, 6-1 Metro Conference), winners of five out of their last six. (From Saturday) Highland School 76 Hampton Roads Academy 70 HRA’s Chris Tang went for a career-high 41 points, but Highland shot 25-33 from the free-throw line to preserve the lead and snap the Navigators’ four-game win streak. HRA fell to 11-4 on the year with the loss.
GIRLS BASKETBALL Highland School 52 Hampton Roads Academy 50 (Friday) HRA stormed back from a 38-27 deficit in the fourth quarter but came up short despite a game-high 23 points from Braysia Hicks. Miller School 43 Williamsburg Christian Academy 41 (Saturday) Whitney Martin scored a game-high 15 points for Miller School, the number two ranked team in the Division II state poll, although the difference was Ashleigh Claybrooks’ go-ahead basket with three seconds left in regulation.
