Grafton, Tabb girls win to setup Thursday’s showdown between Bay Rivers’ top two teams; WCA’s first-place boys, girls roll past Broadwater Academy; Walsingham boys thump Greenbrier Christian on the road, and more.
GIRLS BASKETBALL Bruton 41 Jamestown 29 Grafton 54 Warhill 37 The host Clippers overcame a 9-29 shooting slump in the first half and outscored Warhill 20-6 during the fourth quarter to earn the victory. Rose Mulherin and Hannah Olson led four scorers in double figures for Grafton (17-2, 13-2 Bay Rivers). Christa Hall chipped in with 11 and Olivia Wilson finished with 10 for the Clippers. Alexis Petrin led Warhill with a game-high 18 points. Tabb 38 Lafayette 30 Natalie Joseph scored a game-high 12 points for Tabb as the first-place Tigers (17-2, 14-1 Bay Rivers) survived a scare on the road. Krista Ferrell led Lafayette with nine points and Indyah Brown scored eight for the Rams (8-10, 6-10 Bay Rivers), who fought back to within six points in the final quarter after leading 8-7 after one. Smithfield 53 Poquoson 47 Williamsburg Christian Academy 58 Broadwater Academy 14 WCA (19-4, 11-0 Metro Conference), ranked number one in the VISAA Division 3 state poll, stayed perfect in conference play by thumping second-place Broadwater Academy on their home court. Tiara Strong led the Eagles with 16 points, Ashley Cunningham scored 12 and Keyana Brown added 10. Libby Timmer and Cunningham also held Broadwater’s Madison Bloxom, the Metro Conference’s leading scorer at 18.9ppg, to just two points. Broadwater as a team scored just three total points in the second half.
BOYS BASKETBALL Walsingham Academy 84 Greenbrier Christian 38 Walsingham (17-3, 4-0 TCIS) built a 43-12 lead at the half and cruised to their Tidewater Conference-best fourth-straight victory behind a balanced scoring effort. Braden Sutton (16 points), Brandon LaRose (11 points), Mitch Owens (10 points) and Charles Blaha (10 points) led the Trojans in double figures. Billy Barnes added nine, and Dylan Cheely and Corey Brown finished with eight. Williamsburg Christian Academy 76 Greenbrier Christian 60 Jake Duncan led the Eagles with a game-high 19 points while surpassing the 1,000-point plateau for his career as the Eagles improved their first-place Metro Conference record to 11-1 (18-5 overall). Mark Seaman (17 points), Deron Powers (15 points) and Joe Treacy (14 points) rounded out the top scorers for WCA, who had a 69-36 lead heading into the final quarter before emptying their bench. |
