The Score: Tuesday’s BRD Tournament, Private School Boys Basketball Results

Higher seeds cruise to 30-point victories in Bay Rivers District boys basketball tournament openers; Walsingham, HRA boys earn conference victories.

Bay Rivers District tournament quarterfinals:

 

#1 Grafton 81  #8 Poquoson 50

Elijah Moore led four Grafton scorers in double figures with a game-high 21 points. Kevin Barnes and Blake Ream finished with 14 apiece and point guard Tyler McMillan added 11 for the Clippers (20-3), who built a 45-21 lead at halftime. Dylan Hill led the Islanders with 17 in the loss.

#2 Bruton 80  #7 Warhill 50

Trailing 20-19 after the first period, host Bruton (17-4) outscored Warhill 45-13 in the second and third quarters to pull away. Leo Legaspi and Lonnie Swinton each scored a team-high 15 points and Marcus Carter finished with 12. Sophomore guard Devonte Dedmond  led Warhill with 21 points.

#3 Lafayette 68  #6 Smithfield 39

John Fitchett scored a game-high 20 points and sparked a 14-2 run to open the game as Lafayette ran past visiting Smithfield. Dewayne Johnson scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half and played exceptional defense on the Packers’ Darren Major, the Bay Rivers’ regular-season scoring leader. FULL STORY

#4 Tabb 67  #5 New Kent 38

Joe Nelson led the way with 12 points, Will Baggett scored 11 and Shaq Rodney and Ryan Sawyer each finished with 10 for the Tigers, who outscored New Kent 40-21 in the second half. The loss was the least of the Trojans’ worries, however. New Kent junior guard Marvin Allen was in a serious car accident Monday night and remains hospitalized. The Trojans made a late decision Tuesday to play in Allen’s honor.

 

Thursday’s BRD Tournament Semifinal Pairings:

#1 Grafton (21-4) vs. #4 Tabb (15-8), Grafton High, 7 p.m. (Grafton swept regular-season series 2-0)

#2 Bruton (17-4) vs. #3 Lafayette (15-6), Bruton High, 7 p.m. (teams split regular-season series 1-1).

 

Other Boys Hoops Results from Tuesday Night:

Walsingham Academy 60  Norfolk Christian 30

Brandon LaRose (13 points), Mitch Owens (11 points) and Billy Barnes (11 points) led a balanced scoring attack as Walsingham (21-4) cruised past Norfolk Christian on the road. Miguel Kisoon and Dylan Cheely added eight apiece in the effort. The Trojans are tied with Cape Henry at 7-1 in the TCIS with one game left on Friday.

Hampton Roads Academy 68  Nansemond Suffolk 35

HRA (16-9) connected on 11 of 13 three-pointers during the first half as they led 47-20 at the break. Chris Tang, the Tidewater Conference’s leading scorer,  led the Navigators with 21 points. Trent Topping (13 points) and Quincy Mock (11 points) also scored in double figures for HRA.

Walsingham's boys team did not play Norfolk Christian. They played Norfolk Academy. Norfolk Christian lost lsat night to Cape Henry Collegiate 79-74 in OT.
